Each of the seven input formats exists for a different reason, and understanding those reasons clarifies what happens during conversion. JPG uses lossy DCT-based compression tuned for photographs; PNG is lossless and built for graphics, screenshots, and anything needing transparency; WebP, Google's 2010 format, applies prediction-based compression that typically beats JPEG by 25-35% at equivalent visual quality; GIF is a legacy format limited to 256 colors per frame, mostly relevant today for simple animations; BMP is an uncompressed Windows-native raster format that produces large files with zero quality loss; SVG is not a raster format at all but an XML-based vector description, which is why converting it means rasterizing (rendering the vector shapes into fixed pixels) rather than simply re-encoding; and AVIF, based on the AV1 video codec, is the newest widely supported format, generally out-compressing even WebP at a given quality level, though with somewhat less universal software support as of the mid-2020s.
Converting between these isn't just a container swap — it's fundamentally a decode-then-re-encode operation. The source image, whatever its original format and compression scheme, is fully decoded into raw, uncompressed pixel data by the browser's native image engine (the exact code path a browser uses to display any image on any webpage), drawn onto an in-memory HTML canvas at full native resolution, and then re-encoded from that clean pixel data into the target format using the compression scheme and quality level you choose. That's worth knowing because it means the theoretical best-case output quality is bounded by whatever the input already contained: converting a heavily compressed, artifact-ridden JPG to a lossless PNG doesn't retroactively remove those artifacts, it just locks them in without adding new ones.
This tool is also where format-specific quirks surface most visibly, because so many different source and destination combinations pass through it. Converting anything with transparency (PNG, WebP, GIF) to JPG discards the alpha channel entirely, flattening transparent pixels onto white — a one-way, unrecoverable step if the transparency mattered. Converting an animated GIF or WebP to a static format keeps only the first frame, since none of the three output formats here support animation. And converting SVG rasterizes it at whatever dimensions the SVG file itself specifies, so a vector logo designed at 100×100 pixels will convert to a 100×100 raster image regardless of how large the original vector could theoretically scale — if you need a bigger output, the SVG's width/height attributes need adjusting before conversion, not after.
Each image is decoded by the browser's native image engine — the same underlying code that renders any image on any webpage — regardless of its original format, and drawn onto an off-screen HTML canvas at full native resolution. For SVG input specifically, this step is a full vector rasterization rather than a raster decode: the browser interprets the SVG's paths, shapes, and styling and paints the result at the dimensions specified in the file. Once every source image is represented as raw pixel data on the canvas, it's re-encoded into the target format using canvas.toBlob() — JPEG or WebP encoding applies the quality percentage you set via the slider, while PNG encoding is always lossless regardless of that setting. A single converted file downloads directly; when more than one file is processed, all outputs are automatically bundled into a single ZIP archive using client-side JavaScript, so a folder of fifty mixed-format images becomes one ZIP download rather than fifty separate save dialogs.
