AVI is one of the oldest container formats still in circulation, and its age is exactly why it causes so much friction today. It predates HTML5 video, predates the smartphone, and was designed for the Video for Windows codec ecosystem of the mid-1990s. Browsers have never supported AVI playback natively, iPhones and iPads cannot play it at all without a third-party app, and many modern editing tools, upload forms, and streaming platforms simply reject it outright. MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio, by contrast, is the closest thing the internet has to a universal video standard — every browser, every phone, every smart TV, and every social platform accepts it without complaint.
Because AVI can contain a huge range of different video codecs — some AVI files hold H.264 already, others hold decades-old codecs like DivX, Xvid, Cinepak, or Indeo — this converter does not assume it can simply repackage the data unchanged. It fully decodes the video stream and re-encodes it as H.264 at a CRF (Constant Rate Factor) of 23, a setting widely regarded as visually lossless for most content, and encodes the audio as AAC. This full re-encode step is slower than a simple remux, but it is what guarantees the output MP4 works everywhere, regardless of what obscure codec your original AVI happened to use.
FFmpeg decodes your AVI file's video stream frame by frame — whatever codec it was originally encoded with — and re-encodes it using the libx264 encoder at CRF 23, which balances visual quality against file size. Audio is decoded and re-encoded as AAC, the audio codec MP4 expects for broad compatibility. The -movflags +faststart flag then rewrites the file so its index (moov atom) sits at the beginning rather than the end, meaning the resulting MP4 can start playing in a browser before the whole file has finished downloading, instead of requiring the entire file to load first.
Upload your AVI file
Drag your .avi video file onto the upload zone or click to browse. The file loads directly into your browser — nothing is sent to a server.
Let FFmpeg load
The first time you convert on this site, the ~30 MB FFmpeg WebAssembly engine downloads once and is cached for future use.
Click Convert to MP4
FFmpeg decodes the AVI's video stream — whatever legacy codec it used — and re-encodes it as H.264 at CRF 23.
Audio is re-encoded to AAC
The audio track is converted to AAC, the audio codec MP4 expects for maximum device compatibility.
Wait for encoding to finish
Unlike a simple remux, this is a full re-encode, so processing time depends on video length and resolution — expect it to take longer than instant.
Download the MP4
Save the finished file to your device once the progress bar completes. Your original AVI is left untouched.
Play or upload it anywhere
The MP4 is ready for any device, browser, video editor, or upload form — including YouTube, Instagram, and messaging apps.
iPhone and Android Playback
iOS has no built-in AVI decoder at all, and many Android video apps struggle with older AVI codecs — convert to MP4 so the file plays natively without a special app.
YouTube and Social Uploads
YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok all recommend H.264 MP4; uploading AVI directly sometimes triggers a slow server-side transcode or an outright rejection.
Direct Browser Playback
HTML5 video tags support MP4/H.264 natively in every browser. AVI has no such support, so embedding it on a website requires conversion first.
Modern Editor Compatibility
DaVinci Resolve, Premiere Pro, and CapCut all handle H.264 MP4 more reliably and with better preview performance than legacy AVI codec variants.
Email and Messaging Attachments
Because AVI often uses less efficient legacy compression, converting to H.264 MP4 frequently shrinks the file enough to fit under email or chat attachment limits.
Smart TV and Chromecast Casting
Smart TVs, Roku, Chromecast, and Fire TV all support MP4/H.264 out of the box, while AVI support is inconsistent across these devices.
Works With Any Legacy AVI Codec
Because the video is fully decoded and re-encoded rather than remuxed, this tool produces a working MP4 even from AVI files using obscure or ancient codecs.
CRF 23 — Visually Lossless
H.264 encoding at CRF 23 is the widely used default for near-indistinguishable quality at a reasonable, web-friendly file size.
100% Browser-Based
FFmpeg runs via WebAssembly in your browser tab — no upload, no server, complete privacy for your video files.
Fast-Start Optimized
The -movflags +faststart flag moves metadata to the front of the file so MP4 begins playing before it has fully downloaded.
Universal Output
The resulting MP4 plays on iOS, Android, Windows, Mac, smart TVs, and every modern browser without any additional codec pack.
