PDF to Excel pulls the numbers and text out of a PDF and rebuilds them as rows and columns in an editable XLSX spreadsheet. It exists for a very specific moment: someone hands you a financial statement, a bank statement, an invoice, or a data report as a PDF, and you need those figures in a spreadsheet to recalculate a total, build a chart, or import them into another system — without retyping every cell by hand.
The reason this is genuinely hard, and not just a formatting exercise, is that a PDF has no concept of a "table" or a "cell" anywhere in its file format. It only knows that certain characters were painted at certain X/Y coordinates on the page. There is no row object, no column object, no cell boundary — just text positioned in space, the same way it would be if you dropped individual sticky notes onto a page. Reconstructing a table means inferring structure that was never explicitly stored: which pieces of text share a horizontal line and therefore belong to the same row, and which vertical bands of positions repeat down the page and therefore represent a column.
This tool does that inference by reading every text fragment's coordinates, grouping fragments into rows when their vertical position falls within a few points of each other, then looking at where text clusters horizontally across the whole page to guess where column boundaries fall. Tables that were drawn with visible ruling lines and consistent column widths — the kind you see in bank statements and structured reports — extract cleanly because the text naturally lines up. Borderless tables, tables with merged cells, or layouts where a caption or footnote breaks the usual column rhythm are harder, because the same coordinate logic that finds real columns can also misread stray text as an extra one.
None of this works on a scanned page. A scanned invoice or statement is a photograph of text, not real text — there are no coordinates to read at all until an OCR pass converts the pixels into characters. If your PDF is a scan, running it through an OCR tool first is the only way this converter (or any table extractor) can find anything to place into a spreadsheet.
The PDF is opened with pdfjs-dist and, page by page, every text fragment is read along with its X and Y coordinates on the page. Fragments are sorted by vertical position and grouped into rows whenever their Y-coordinates fall within roughly four points of each other — close enough to be on the same printed line. All the X-coordinates seen across the page are then clustered into column buckets, spaced about ten points apart, so that text repeatedly appearing near the same horizontal position is recognized as belonging to one column rather than several. Each row's fragments are dropped into their nearest column bucket to build a two-dimensional grid, and that grid is written into a worksheet with SheetJS — the same open-source library used by countless spreadsheet tools. Every PDF page produces its own worksheet in the output workbook, and the entire pipeline runs inside your browser tab with nothing sent to a server.
