Under the hood, every character your computer displays is really just a number, defined by a character encoding standard. The original ASCII standard assigned every English letter, digit, and common symbol a number from 0 to 127, which fits in 7 bits. Modern systems almost universally use 8-bit bytes instead, both because hardware is byte-addressable and because it leaves room for extended characters (accented letters, currency symbols, and more) in the 128-255 range. How It Works

For text-to-binary, each character in your input is passed through .charCodeAt(0) to get its Unicode code point (0-255 for standard Latin text), which is then converted with .toString(2) and left-padded with zeros using .padStart(8, '0') to guarantee a full 8-bit group, even for small values like the code point for the letter 'A' (65 → 1000001 → padded to 01000001). The groups are joined with single spaces. For binary-to-text, the reverse process splits the input on whitespace, validates that every group is exactly 8 characters of only 0s and 1s using a regular expression, then runs parseInt(group, 2) to get the numeric code point and String.fromCharCode() to turn that number back into a character. If any group fails validation — wrong length, or contains a digit other than 0 or 1 — the tool stops and reports exactly which requirement wasn't met rather than producing garbled output.
