AVI is the container most digital camcorders, older webcams, and legacy screen-recording software from the 2000s and early 2010s defaulted to, which means a huge amount of family footage, recorded meetings, and old webinar captures still sit around as .avi files today. Often the video itself is no longer needed — what you actually want is just the audio: a toast from a wedding video, the audio of an old conference call, or a song that was filmed off a TV or radio. Pulling audio out of a video container is called demuxing, and unlike converting video to video, it does not require touching the picture at all.
This tool reads the audio stream already inside your AVI file — commonly stored as uncompressed PCM, ADPCM, or MP2/MP3 by older encoders — and re-encodes it as a clean MP3 using the industry-standard libmp3lame encoder at VBR quality level 2, which targets roughly 190 kbps and is generally considered transparent or very close to it for most listeners. The video track is discarded entirely, which is also why extraction is much faster than a full video conversion: FFmpeg never has to decode a single video frame, only the audio samples.
FFmpeg loads your AVI file and uses the -vn flag to explicitly ignore the video stream, then decodes just the audio track — regardless of whether it was originally stored as PCM, ADPCM, or a compressed codec — and re-encodes it with libmp3lame at quality level 2 (-q:a 2), which is a variable-bitrate setting that allocates more bits to complex passages and fewer to silence or simple audio. The result is an MP3 file typically in the 170–210 kbps range with no video component at all, produced entirely inside your browser tab.
Upload your AVI file
Drag your .avi file onto the upload zone or click to browse. The file is read directly in your browser — nothing is sent to a server.
Let FFmpeg load
The first time you use a tool on this site, the ~30 MB FFmpeg WebAssembly engine downloads once and stays cached for later use.
Click Extract Audio
FFmpeg ignores the video stream entirely and decodes only the audio track from your AVI file.
Audio is encoded to MP3
The decoded audio is re-encoded using libmp3lame at VBR quality level 2, targeting roughly 190 kbps.
Download the MP3
Save the finished .mp3 file to your device. Your original AVI file is left completely unmodified.
Use it anywhere
Import into a music player, podcast editor, or messaging app — MP3 plays on virtually every device and platform without conversion.
Old Home Video Audio
Pull a wedding toast, a child's first words, or a family reunion conversation out of a decades-old camcorder AVI file without needing to keep the bulky original video around.
Archived Conference Calls
Old recorded meetings saved by legacy webinar or screen-capture tools as AVI can be reduced to just the spoken audio for note-taking or transcription.
Lecture Audio for Commuting
Extract the spoken audio from a recorded AVI lecture so it fits in a phone's music app for listening during a commute, without carrying a multi-gigabyte video file.
Camcorder Voiceover Recovery
When only the audio track of an old home movie is usable (faded or corrupted video), extracting it to MP3 preserves the narration or dialogue permanently.
Recovering Audio from TV/Radio Captures
Old AVI recordings made by pointing a camcorder at a TV or radio broadcast can be reduced to just the usable audio track.
Custom Ringtones from Old Clips
Pull a short, nostalgic audio snippet from a legacy AVI file and convert it into an MP3 short enough to use as a phone ringtone.
Handles Legacy AVI Audio Codecs
Decodes older PCM and ADPCM audio commonly found in camcorder and webcam AVI files, not just modern compressed formats.
VBR MP3 at ~190 kbps
libmp3lame quality level 2 produces excellent-quality VBR MP3 that is close to indistinguishable from the source audio for most listening situations.
100% Browser-Based
FFmpeg WebAssembly strips video and encodes audio entirely locally — old personal footage never has to leave your device.
No Video Decoding Needed
Because the video stream is skipped entirely via the -vn flag, extraction is far faster than a full conversion, even for old, large AVI captures.
Universal MP3 Compatibility
MP3 output plays on every device, app, and media player without any additional software or codec pack.
