What is PDF to Word?

PDF to Word solves a problem that is fundamentally different from most file conversions: a PDF has already thrown away the original document's structure. Whatever word processor created it — Word, InDesign, LaTeX, Google Docs — described the content as paragraphs, styles, and flowing text; the PDF only remembers where each character sits on the page. Turning that back into something editable is a reconstruction job, not a lossless round trip, and different converters take different approaches to it. This one renders each page as a high-quality image at the exact visual fidelity of the source PDF, then lays an invisible, precisely positioned text layer over every word on that page — the same general technique used to make scanned PDFs searchable, applied here to produce a Word document instead. The result looks identical to the original PDF and the underlying text is fully selectable, copyable, and searchable in Word.

The practical difference between a text-based PDF and a scanned one matters here. A text-based PDF — one exported from Word, printed to PDF from a browser, or generated by any modern app — embeds the actual characters with their coordinates, so the invisible text layer this tool builds lines up precisely with what is printed on the page underneath. A scanned PDF, on the other hand, is just a photograph of a page with no embedded text at all. This tool does not run OCR, so a scanned page converts with its visual appearance fully intact but with no searchable text layer behind it — if you need to pull actual text out of a scan, that's a job for a dedicated OCR tool, not an image-preserving converter like this one.

Because each page becomes an image rather than a reconstructed flow of paragraphs, layouts that trip up text-reconstruction converters — multi-column newsletters, resumes with side columns, tables with merged cells, forms with precise field alignment — come through looking exactly as designed, with no re-flowed columns or misaligned cells. The trade-off is that the visible content is a picture, not live text: to actually rewrite a sentence rather than just copy it, select all the text (Ctrl+A), open the Font settings, uncheck Hidden, and delete the background image — at that point the previously invisible text becomes a normal, editable paragraph. For documents where the only copy left is the final PDF — a contract you need to amend, a resume you want to update, a report whose original Word file is long gone — this gets you back to something you can search, copy from, and eventually edit, without guessing at how a layout engine might have reflowed a complex page.

How It Works

Each page is rendered at 1.5× resolution via PDF.js and saved as a JPEG, preserving colours, images, tables, and layout exactly as they appear in the PDF — including multi-column pages and dark or watermarked backgrounds. Simultaneously, every text item on that page is extracted with its exact x/y coordinates and font size, whether or not the PDF has real embedded text. The docx library places the rendered image as the page canvas and adds hidden (vanished) paragraph frames over each extracted text item, at the same coordinates — matching the technique Adobe Acrobat uses internally to make scanned PDFs searchable. Nothing about the page layout is reflowed or guessed at; the image is the layout, and the hidden text is what makes that layout searchable and copyable inside Word.

How to Use

  1. 1

    Upload your PDF

Drop a PDF file onto the upload area or click to browse for it. The file is read locally in your browser before anything happens to it.

  2. 2

    Start conversion

Click "Convert to Word". Each page is rendered as a high-resolution image while its text items are extracted with their exact coordinates in the background.

  3. 3

    Watch the progress indicator

A progress ring shows page-by-page status. Longer documents, or pages with many embedded images and tables, take a little longer to render than plain text pages.

  4. 4

    Download the DOCX

Click the download button to save the Word document to your device. Open it in Microsoft Word, Word Online, Google Docs, or LibreOffice — all render it identically.

  5. 5

    Copy or search as needed

Select text to copy it, or press Ctrl+F in Word to search the document — the hidden text layer responds to both even though the visible page is an image.

  6. 6

Unlock live editing if you need it

To actually rewrite text rather than just copy it, select all (Ctrl+A), open Font settings, uncheck Hidden, then delete the background image — the previously invisible text becomes a normal editable paragraph.

Who Uses This Tool

✍️

Editing a Document You Only Have as a PDF

The original Word file is gone, but the final PDF of a contract, report, or letter survived. Convert it to get back searchable, copyable content you can build on.

📄

Updating an Old Resume

Only the exported PDF of an old resume survives. Convert it to Word, unhide the text layer, and edit it directly instead of rebuilding the layout from scratch.

📊

Repurposing Report Content

Pull text and figures out of a PDF report to reuse in a new document, a presentation, or a summary memo without retyping anything.

🎓

Academic Research

Convert PDF journal articles, whitepapers, or textbook chapters to Word so you can highlight, annotate, and copy quotations directly.

⚖️

Legal & Compliance Review

Convert a signed or scanned contract to Word so counsel can redline it, track changes, and produce an amended version without retyping clauses.

🏢

Business Templates & Forms

Convert a branded PDF template or intake form to an editable Word file so team members can fill in fields or adjust copy freely.

📰

Multi-Column & Magazine-Style Layouts

Newsletters, brochures, and academic papers with side-by-side columns keep their exact positioning because the page is preserved as an image rather than reflowed as text.

📧

Quick Turnaround Edits

Someone sends a PDF that needs a small correction. Convert, unhide the text, fix the line, and export back to PDF for sending — faster than recreating the whole document.

Why Choose This Tool

Pixel-Perfect Page Layout

Each page is rendered as a high-quality image so the visual output looks identical to the original PDF regardless of fonts, design complexity, or how the source file was produced.

Multi-Column and Table Layouts Survive Intact

Because the page is preserved as an image rather than reconstructed as flowing text, complex layouts — side-by-side columns, merged table cells, precisely aligned forms — never get scrambled the way they can with text-reconstruction converters.

Searchable Hidden Text Layer

The tool adds an invisible text layer positioned at the exact coordinates of the original text, so you can select it, copy it, and use Ctrl+F to search the document in Word.

100% Private — No Manual Uploads to Third Parties

The conversion pipeline uses PDF.js and the docx library to process your file without routing it through any third-party conversion service.

Works With Any PDF

Designed PDFs, scanned documents, dark-background files, and watermarked PDFs all convert correctly — a scanned page simply ends up with an empty (rather than inaccurate) text layer.

No Page Limit

There is no hard limit on the number of pages. Large PDFs render page-by-page with a visible progress indicator so you can see exactly where the conversion is.
