What is MKV to MOV?

MKV is the format of choice for movie rips, anime releases, and archival encodes precisely because it can hold almost anything — HEVC or AV1 video, several audio languages, several subtitle tracks, chapters, attached fonts. Apple's ecosystem was never built around it. QuickTime Player, iMovie, and Final Cut Pro are built on the QuickTime File Format (.mov), and macOS and iOS have no built-in Matroska demuxer at all, so an MKV file dropped onto a Mac frequently just refuses to open, or opens in a third-party player that is not part of the native editing chain.

This tool converts MKV to MOV using a stream copy rather than a re-encode: FFmpeg reads the video and audio streams already inside your MKV file and repackages them into a QuickTime-compatible MOV container, provided the codecs involved are ones QuickTime understands — H.264 or HEVC video with AAC or PCM audio being the most reliable combination. Because no decoding or re-encoding happens, the visual and audio quality are identical to the source, and conversion finishes in seconds rather than the minutes a full transcode would take. If your MKV carries a codec QuickTime does not support, such as VP9 or AV1 video or Opus audio, the remux will fail rather than produce a broken file, since there is no safe way to relabel a codec QuickTime cannot decode.

How It Works

FFmpeg inspects your MKV's stream headers to identify the default video and audio codec, then performs a stream copy (-c copy) that lifts the existing compressed data out of the Matroska container and writes it into a QuickTime atom-based MOV structure. This works cleanly when the codecs are ones MOV natively supports — H.264 or HEVC video, AAC or PCM audio — and finishes almost instantly since no frame is ever decoded. Extra audio tracks, subtitle streams, and chapter data present in the MKV are not carried over, as MOV has no equivalent structure for them in this workflow.

How to Use

  1. 1

    Upload your MKV file

Drag your .mkv file onto the upload zone or click to browse. Nothing uploads to a server.

  2. 2

Confirm your MKV's codec if unsure

H.264 or HEVC video with AAC audio converts most reliably; VP9, AV1, or Opus will typically fail since QuickTime cannot decode them.

  3. 3

    Let FFmpeg load

The first time you convert on this site, the ~30 MB FFmpeg WebAssembly engine downloads once and is cached afterward.

  4. 4

    Click Convert to MOV

FFmpeg copies the default video and audio streams directly into a QuickTime-compatible MOV container.

  5. 5

Wait for the remux to finish

Since no re-encoding happens for compatible codecs, most files finish in a few seconds regardless of length.

  6. 6

    Download the MOV file

Save the finished .mov file to your device. The original MKV remains untouched.

  7. 7

    Open it in Apple software

Import into QuickTime Player, iMovie, or Final Cut Pro, or share via AirDrop between Apple devices.
