What is GIF to WEBM?

GIF was built in 1987 as a still-image format that happens to support crude frame-by-frame animation, which is why it makes such an inefficient video substitute: a 256-color palette per frame, minimal compression between frames, and no audio track. WebM is the opposite kind of format — an open, royalty-free container developed by Google specifically for efficient web video, built around the VP8 and VP9 codecs, which use real motion-compensated compression the same way H.264 does. Converting a GIF to WebM instead of MP4 is a deliberate choice for web developers who want to stay entirely within royalty-free, open-source codec territory, since VP8/VP9 carry no patent licensing concerns the way H.264 historically has for some commercial uses.

This tool decodes every frame of your GIF, including its per-frame 256-color palette, and re-encodes the sequence using the libvpx VP8 encoder at a fixed 1 Mbps bitrate, a setting that balances visual quality against file size for typical short web animations. Because VP8 uses full 24-bit color and motion compensation between frames rather than GIF's largely independent frame storage, the resulting WebM file is routinely a fraction of the original GIF's size while looking cleaner, since the dithering patterns GIF uses to fake extra colors are no longer needed once the video is encoded in full color.

How It Works

FFmpeg decodes each frame of your GIF along with its palette data, then re-encodes the full sequence using the libvpx encoder targeting a video bitrate of 1 Mbps (-b:v 1M). VP8 applies motion-compensated inter-frame compression, meaning frames that change only slightly from the one before them are stored far more efficiently than GIF's largely per-frame storage allows. The result is a standard WebM container that plays natively in the HTML5 video tag across Chrome, Firefox, and Edge without any plugin or additional codec.

How to Use

  1. 1

    Upload your GIF

Drag your animated .gif file onto the upload zone or click to browse. The file loads directly into your browser's memory.

  2. 2

    Let FFmpeg load

On your first conversion, the ~30 MB FFmpeg WebAssembly engine downloads once and stays cached for future conversions.

  3. 3

    Click Convert to WebM

FFmpeg decodes every GIF frame and re-encodes the sequence using the libvpx VP8 encoder at a 1 Mbps target bitrate.

  4. 4

    Watch the progress bar

Encoding time depends on the number of frames and resolution, but most GIFs finish in a few seconds.

  5. 5

    Download the WebM

Save the finished .webm file, which is typically a fraction of the original GIF's size at cleaner visual quality.

  6. 6

Embed it with looping if needed

Use the loop and autoplay attributes on an HTML5 video tag to reproduce GIF-like looping behavior, and consider pairing it with an MP4 fallback for Safari.
