The GIF format was never actually designed for video — it is an image format from 1987 that happens to support multiple frames, and that origin causes real problems at video length. GIF is limited to a palette of 256 colors per frame, has no real inter-frame compression (each frame is largely stored on its own, with only basic run-length encoding), and carries no audio capability whatsoever. The result is that a 10-second animated GIF at reasonable quality can easily run 15-20 MB, while the same clip as an MP4 might be under 1 MB, because H.264 uses motion compensation between frames and a full 24-bit color space instead of a 256-color palette.
This tool decodes every frame of your GIF and re-encodes them as a proper H.264 video stream inside an MP4 container. Because GIF has no fixed color depth requirement and H.264 requires even pixel dimensions, the converter automatically scales the width and height down to the nearest even number if needed and converts color data to the yuv420p pixel format that every browser and device expects for smooth playback. The visual result typically looks noticeably better than the source GIF, since dithering artifacts from the 256-color palette disappear once the video is encoded in full color, even though no new detail is technically being added that was not decodable from the original frames.
FFmpeg decodes each frame of your GIF, including its per-frame color palette and any dithering, and re-encodes the sequence as H.264 video. The -pix_fmt yuv420p flag converts the output to the color format nearly every video player and browser expects, avoiding the black-screen or corrupted-playback issue that can occur with unconverted palette-based sources. A scale filter automatically rounds width and height down to the nearest even pixel count, since H.264 requires even dimensions and many GIFs (especially ones cropped or resized by hand) end up with odd ones. The -movflags +faststart flag also moves the file's index to the front so the MP4 can begin playing before it has fully downloaded.
