WebM to MP3 pulls the audio track out of a WebM file and re-encodes it as a standalone MP3, discarding the VP8 or VP9 video entirely. WebM files showing up on someone's computer are almost never from a camera — they're the native output of browser-based recording: the MediaRecorder API that Loom, OBS's browser source, screen-recording extensions, and countless in-browser recording tools default to, plus WebRTC-based platforms like Google Meet and Discord that build directly on WebM's container and codec choices.
The audio codec inside a WebM file is typically Opus, a codec purpose-built for exactly the low-latency, variable-content scenarios browser recording and real-time communication involve — it handles both speech and music well, adapts efficiently across a huge bitrate range, and was engineered from the ground up by people who also worked on real-time voice codecs, which is why WebRTC, Discord, and Google Meet all rely on it internally. Some older WebM files use Vorbis instead, an earlier open audio codec that predates Opus and is less efficient but still fully decodable. Either way, the practical problem is the same: Opus and Vorbis, while excellent codecs, have nowhere near MP3's universal hardware and software support. Car stereos, standalone MP3 players, older phones, and a huge amount of legacy audio software simply don't know what to do with an Opus stream, even when it's technically superior on paper.
That's the entire reason this conversion exists: take audio that's technically excellent but narrowly supported, and re-encode it into a format that's technically more limited but works absolutely everywhere. The extraction uses libmp3lame at quality level 2, a variable-bitrate setting averaging around 190kbps that's well-documented as transparent for the overwhelming majority of listening scenarios — meaning the practical audible difference between the Opus source and the MP3 output is generally undetectable, even though you're technically going from a more modern codec to an older one.
Because the -vn flag discards the video stream before any decoding happens, this extraction is markedly faster than converting the WebM to another video format would be — only the audio needs to be decoded and re-encoded, not the VP8/VP9 video frames. This matters in practice: a 45-minute recorded meeting or webinar in WebM extracts its audio in a fraction of the time a full video conversion would need. All of this runs locally via FFmpeg WebAssembly, so a recorded call, a personal Loom video, or a browser-captured screen recording never has to leave your machine just to pull the sound out of it.
FFmpeg opens the WebM container and discards the VP8/VP9 video stream immediately using the -vn flag, so no video decoding happens at all. The existing Opus or Vorbis audio is decoded and re-encoded through libmp3lame at quality level 2, a VBR setting averaging around 190kbps that's considered transparent for typical listening. Because video processing is skipped entirely, extraction is much faster than any full video conversion and scales mainly with the audio track's own length.
