An XML sitemap is a structured index of every URL on a site that you want search engines to know about, formatted according to the sitemaps.org protocol that Google, Bing, and Yandex all support. It exists because crawlers discover pages primarily by following links, and that link-following process has real limits: pages several clicks deep from the homepage, pages with no internal links pointing to them at all, pages behind JavaScript-rendered navigation a crawler might not execute, and pages on a brand-new site with no external backlinks yet are all at risk of being missed or indexed slowly through crawling alone. A sitemap sidesteps that by handing the crawler a direct, complete list rather than making it find every URL by exploration.
This matters most in a handful of concrete situations: launching a new site with no existing search visibility, publishing a large batch of new content at once and wanting faster discovery than organic crawling would provide, running a large e-commerce catalog where category and product pages can be many links deep, or restructuring a site's URLs and needing search engines to pick up the new structure quickly. A sitemap does not guarantee indexing or ranking — Google is explicit that it is a discovery hint, not a promise — but it removes discovery as the bottleneck and gives you visibility into exactly which URLs you have told search engines about.
This generator can build your sitemap two ways. Point it at a domain and click Fetch Pages, and it will first check robots.txt for an existing Sitemap: directive, then try common sitemap paths, and if none exist, crawl your site's internal links directly (up to 200 pages) to assemble a URL list automatically. Or skip discovery entirely and paste your own list of paths if you already know exactly which URLs belong in the sitemap — useful for a curated subset rather than every page a crawl would find. Either way, output includes the required <loc> tag for every URL, plus optional <lastmod> and <changefreq> hints, and Google-recommended priority values assigned automatically (1.0 for the homepage, 0.8 for other pages) so the file is ready to use without manual editing.
Everything runs in your browser — crawling uses public CORS proxies to fetch page HTML client-side, and the final XML is assembled and downloaded locally with no data uploaded to any server other than the target site itself and the pages it links to.
When you click Fetch Pages, the tool first requests /robots.txt from your domain looking for a "Sitemap:" directive, then tries common sitemap file paths (sitemap.xml, sitemap_index.xml, wp-sitemap.xml, and similar). If a sitemap is found — including a sitemap index referencing multiple child sitemaps — it extracts every <loc> URL directly. If no sitemap exists anywhere, the tool falls back to crawling: starting from your homepage, it parses the HTML for internal links, follows each newly discovered same-origin link breadth-first, and collects unique paths until it hits a 200-page safety limit. Once you have a URL list (fetched or manually pasted), clicking Generate Sitemap assigns a priority to each path (1.0 for the homepage, 0.8 for everything else, per Google's general guidance), optionally attaches today's date as <lastmod> and your chosen <changefreq> value, and wraps every entry in the <url><loc>...</loc></url> structure required by the sitemaps.org XML schema.
