MKV files frequently come from movie and TV rips, anime releases, or downloaded lecture recordings, and they often carry several audio tracks at once — an original language track, a dubbed track, a commentary track — bundled alongside the video. When what you actually want is just the sound, whether that is the film score, a specific dub, or a spoken-word recording, extracting it directly avoids keeping a multi-gigabyte video file around for something you will only ever listen to.
This tool reads the default (first) audio stream inside your MKV file, whatever codec it happens to be stored as — AAC, AC-3, DTS, Opus, FLAC, or MP3 are all common in Matroska rips — and re-encodes it as a clean, universal MP3 using the industry-standard libmp3lame encoder at VBR quality level 2, which targets roughly 190 kbps. The video stream is discarded entirely rather than just hidden, which is also why extraction is dramatically faster than a full video conversion: FFmpeg never has to touch a single video frame, only the audio samples.
FFmpeg loads your MKV file and applies the -vn flag to skip the video stream entirely, then decodes the default audio track — regardless of whether it was stored as AAC, AC-3, DTS, Opus, or FLAC — and re-encodes it with libmp3lame at quality level 2 (-q:a 2), a variable-bitrate setting that allocates more data to complex passages and less to quiet or simple sections. The output is a standalone MP3 typically in the 170–210 kbps range, produced entirely inside your browser tab without decoding any video.
Upload your MKV file
Drag your .mkv file onto the upload zone or click to browse. The file is read directly in your browser.
Confirm the right audio track is default
If your MKV has multiple audio tracks, the default one is what gets extracted — check this beforehand in a media player if it matters.
Set audio quality
Choose an MP3 bitrate for the extracted audio, or leave the default VBR quality level 2 setting for a good balance of size and fidelity.
Click Extract Audio
FFmpeg ignores the video stream entirely and decodes only the default audio track from your MKV file.
Audio is encoded to MP3
The decoded audio is re-encoded using libmp3lame, downmixing surround audio like DTS or AC-3 to stereo if needed.
Download the MP3
Save the finished .mp3 file to your device. Your original MKV file is left completely unmodified.
